Who hates U/R Delver?

Looks like alot of people came in with some decks that have good matchups into Delver.  We had a good turn out of lands decks and control decks.

Suprise?

Not surprising to see Delver in the Top 8. But its good to see some hate decks like lands and control show up to deal with it.

Winners Area!

After a stacked  top 8 we have your Volcanic winner Jim Dudek. I asked Jim a couple of questions and here are the responses.

Why did you choose the Deck?

I decided to play Naya Depths for this event mainly due to it being 2 weeks out from Legacy Pit as I think it’s in a good position as it can grind pretty well with the control decks and I believe can be decently favorable against UR Delver. On top of this, the deck also just has its free wins sometimes. At the point signing up for this event I was about 90% sure I was gonna register this deck for the Pit so I figured I’d might as well get the practice in.

What did you sideboard against?

I had quite the range of decks I played against. Played a couple of tribal decks in the form of Goblins and Merfolk where the sb glacial chasm came in handy. I also played against 8-Cast, Hammer, and then Moon Stompy in the finals where the Force of Vigors and Outland Liberator. Against Reanimator I had brought in some Deafening Silences and Endurance. Then against the 4c Control deck I had brought in my Pyroblasts and Chokes. Of course some of these cards overlapped in the other matchups as well like the Pyroblasts also got brought in against 8-Cast and Merfolk for example.

What matchups did you want to avoid?

Mostly Kelly Briner on Doomsday. My deck technically has tools to beat it between Endurance and sideboard Pyroblast effects but it’s not something I can really do much about.

How did you prepare for the event?

I didn’t prepare for this event in particular, but it was definitely more of an event that I was mostly using to help me prepare for the Legacy Pit and I had already had plenty of reps in with this deck leading up to this event. Group playtest or Online? If we want to count FNMs and other weeklies as group playtest then lately that’s been my main testing avenue. I usually just grind on Magic Online 90% of the time through leagues and sometimes the Sunday Legacy challenges but I’ve been grinding a lot less than I normally have been lately.

Any pregame rituals?

Nothing too big. If I leave my place early enough I’ll stop and get a Dutch Bros Rebel, otherwise I’ll just grab whatever energy drink the stores offer when I get there, preferably a Monster. Otherwise I’m just vibing and chatting with buddies while I wait for round 1 to start.

What is your favorite Magic Card and why is it Island?

Island casts brainstorm so that’s an easy answer. I’ve been enjoying the hell out of Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes recently though. At this past event I got to finally get the achievement unlocked of using the -2 to fling a Marit Lage, and the amount of value and closing speed this planeswalker has all in such a cohesive 1 card package has felt incredible otherwise.

Any extra comments? Shout-outs?

I’ll see some of you guys in Richmond for the Legacy Pit when I win the belt from Gary Wong!
